From NFL.com:
RICHMOND, Va. (July 17, 2007) — Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to illegal dogfighting.
Vick and three others are charged with competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.
The dogfighting operation was named “Bad Newz Kennels,” according to the indictment, and the dogs were housed, trained and fought at a Surry County, Virginia property owned by Vick.
The indictment alleges that the 27-year-old Vick and his co-defendants began a grisly dogfighting operation in early 2001 in which dogs fought to the death — or close. Losing dogs were sometimes killed by electrocution, drowning, hanging or gunshots.
…
About eight young dogs were put to death after they were found not ready to fight in April 2007. They were killed “by hanging, drowning and/or slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground,” according to the indictment.
…
Authorities seized 66 dogs, including 55 pit bulls, and equipment commonly used in dogfighting. About half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact — an arrangement typical for fighting dogs, according to the search warrant affidavit.
…
Before fights, participating dogs of the same sex would be weighed and bathed, according to the filings. Opposing dogs would be washed to remove any poison or narcotic placed on the dog’s coat that could affect the other dog’s performance.
Sometimes, dogs weren’t fed to “make it more hungry for the other dog,” it said.
Vick is a sick psychopath. The NFL and the Atlanta Falcons should immediately throw his sorry ass off of the team. To call the NFL and let them know how you feel about Michael Vick, dial 212-450-2000 to reach their public relations department.
If they do not take action protest by not watching the Atlanta Falcons when they play.
There is also a good story about this on ABCNews.com.
Go to the Humane Society to see one of the 51 dogs seized from Vick.

I only wish we could punish him like his did to his dogs. It’s unfair and he should be physically punished untill he is unfit to play his football games (which is the only thing he has besides money and a twisted mind)Take away his football career and he will be flipping burgers because football is all he knows.

Flipping burgers? In the prison cafeteria, if there’s any justice.

Hate does not even come close to what I feel for this monster. It absolutely blows my mind that any human could be so unbelievably horrible. It disgusts me beyond my level of comprehension how this is considered a “sport” and I sincerely hope Vick gets the maximum amount of punishment allowed by law. I would rather see him thrown to the ground, beaten, electricuted and then finally tossed into a ring with all of the dogs he has “trained.” somehow I don’t think his reaction would be the same. Animal cruelty laws need to be much stronger in this country and I truly hope that this case will make an impact on that.

I wish people would put things in perspective sometimes. Yeah dogfighting is bad and ugly, but people want to crucify him worse than someone who gets a DUI (and could’ve actually killed a human), or deals heroin (and could’ve ruined hundreds of human lives through addiction), or even shot somebody. You can get far less time in jail for doing all of these things. We slaughter millions of chicken and cattle each year for consumption and yet these animals have less rights that a dog. At least in a dog fight, a dog has chance to survive and not be slaughtered.
6. Andrea, 2007-07-26 10:13
Brendan, you are an a-hole. This “person” (and i use that term loosely) is a role model and public figure. He is a disgusting waste of human life and should be stripped of everything that puts him in the aforementioned role model and public figure category. I hope you suffer a horrendous torture similar to those in the Bad Newz Kennel.
7. Bethany, 2007-07-26 10:24
Brendan – let me ask you a question; if this were two children and not two dogs (who by the way do NOT have the chance to survive since the article clearly states that even if these fights take hours, they are until the death) would you feel any different? the reason i ask is because i look at dogs as if they are children – under normal circumstances, we feed, bathe, shelter and love dogs very similar to the way we love our families and children in today’s society. i understand where you’re coming from, but there is no justification to this conduct – dogs, humans or other. before you’re so quick to judge and talk about chickens and cattle, you should at least know whether or not i am a vegan – at least i’m doing my part. good day sir!
8. brendon, 2007-07-26 10:54
I was hoping to spark some debate on the issue rather than just name calling and wishing people violent deaths – I mean how much thought did you put into that Andrea. Bethany, you are correct, being a vegan as you are, you do not aid in the slaughter of millions of cattle and chickens, so I applaud you for doing that. I understand your point about comparing them to children, however, I just do not put dogs or any domesticated animal on the same level as a human life. Now obviously there will be many that disagree with me, but I was trying to spur some higher level reasoning regarding the disparity in animal rights there are. Why should any animal have more rights than another, maybe they shouldn’t, but at least by people responses, they put dogs above other animals that we consume every day (vegans excluded).
Now I’ve also been all over the world and been to Japan where they eat raw horse meat and South Korea where they do infact eat dogs and have dog farms. I’ve also been to India where a cow is sacred and they are disgusted by the fact that people eat beef. So my point is that not everybody puts the same value on animals. I personally rank the life of a human above animals because of what they (CAN) contribute to society. Now dogs and other pets can certainly generate a lot of happiness in people’s lives, but that is hard to measure quantifiably (of course a select few lead the blind and aid police which I can place a measurable value on). In comparison to say the number of Habitat homes I have helped build – and subsequent families lives I have made a difference in.
But this is why I think a someone driving drunk or dealing drugs is more of a scumbag than someone who has partaken in dogfights. This is not to say these folks should not be punished, but in a proportional sense.
Now I should add before more name calling begins, I absolutely respect others point of views, I just may not agree. I hope you will make an effort to do the same.

Way too much time on your hands, Bren. Go back to Habitat for Humanity or Doctors without Borders, or whatever other charity you hail from to make yourself feel better about your lack of morals. And I didnt wish death on you, just torture. That ain’t so bad right? I mean, you’re just one human.

Brendon,
In my opinion, drinking and driving etc, is on the same level as dogfights. Animals are innocent creatures, and to be bred for men’s amusement is disgusting.
As far as the other country’s, well I’m sorry to say this, but are they really as civilized as the western world? No. they are not.
Last point, think about those dogs they are breeding to fight, think about kids etc that were mauled by dogs such as pit bulls etc. Do you not think that those animals bred that way put humans at greater risk also?

Brendon – it is obvious to me after reading these comments that you do not have a dog. and if you do, and i do not mean to offend when i say this, please give it to someone who will truly appreciate it. i think what you have to realize is when you have a dog (or cat, or any animal for that matter – i was in vegas last week where a girl had an 8 foot python as a pet and lets it sleep in her bed and roam around her apt. as if it were domesticated) it literally becomes like your child. you love this pet unconditionally, and for many people it is the first experience you have of someone/thing relying compeltely on you to take care of it. it is a very life changing feeling – trust me on this because i dont have, NOR do i want children, but i do have a lovely dog who means the world to me. the point im trying to make is that while i can see what you’re saying about drunk drivers/drug dealers, i do believe it’s different as these people are making choices – these dogs are not. i would also like to point out that i have never heard of anyone betting thousands of dollars on how far a drunk driver can go before seriously injuring or killing someone – such like these dog fights. they are making money off of the death of innocent animals. until that starts happeing with drunk drivers (and yes i know drug dealers are making a profit off of “clients” who OD, but again BOTH parties in this case are making a CHOICE to do so) i see a very large disconnect here. i do respect your differnece of opinion, however it is extremely hard for me not to get upset that people don’t take this more seriously, moreso the law than yourself. good work on the habitat houses – i’m glad to see that you’re not just some jerk who’s trying to cause trouble but that you help out and are passionate about your own cause. i do , however, hope this blog will help you become a tad more passionate about animal rights.

so here is my point of view. I do appreciate that different cultures and people have varying beliefs and value systems when it comes to anmials. But what outrages me about this conduct is that a man who has a blossoming career in football in America chooses to operate such a vicious heartless practice. I love Bethany’s point…animals are helpless and innocent and are completely dependent upon us (humans…the “intelligent species”) for their care and upbringing just like our children. Each of these dogs is stripped of its opportunity to be in a loving home and part of a family. This lack of empathy to me reflects a sociopathic behavior which should not be tolerated. It frightens me that someone could be that heartless and i wouldn’t this person anywhere near my children let alone my dog. I hope he goes to jail and gets kicked out of football forever. I think the punishment would not even fit the crime but we are not a barbaric culture…with the exception of a few …namely Vick.
13. Bethany, 2007-07-26 11:23
Brendon – One more point i would like to make about the breeding of dogs for the purpose of dog fighting is that among the million other reasons why this practice breaks my heart – it is especially sad about the image it portrays for pit bulls. i was walking my dog the other night when a woman walked by with her beautiful sweet pit bull, Styles, who was abused and then abandoned. luckily styles was adopted into a loving environment, but it is ludiciris how many people are afraid of/against pit bulls for this very reason. please look on petfinder.com if you ever have some spare time and take a look at how many pit bulls are on there. its heartbreaking. so many will not get adopted because of this image dog fighting has helped perpetuate. i noticed your last name sounds a bit on the irish side – wouldnt you just hate it if every person you met generalized you as a dumb irish drunk? i know it would piss me off if people assumed i was a dumb blonde (which i am neither) based on my swedish heritage.

ITS VERY SIMPLE …. THIS GUY IS A ASSHOLE AND ANYONE ELSE THAT IS THIS CRUEL TO ANY ANIMALS SHOULD ROT IN JAIL !!!! LOSER !!
16. brendon, 2007-07-26 12:32
Well, most of you bring up good points. So thanks for that….I just wanted to stir the brain a little without it becoming just an emotional debate, but one with rational reasons and interesting points.

Vick is dead meat – hopefully his trial will draw all the maggots who engage in this sickening crime.
